Coming to NY only a few weeks after the Superbowl (still trying to erase the thought from memory), I thought I would be bombarded with Manning jerseys on everyone in the city.
Surprisingly this wasn’t the case. Though I did see construction workers with their NY Giants hardhats, which is pretty dope, most of those in the city were too swept up with LINsanity and the NY Rangers run at being number one in the NHL.
Eating a delicious plate of Scallops and drinking a Yuengling -“americas oldest beer”- solo at Legends in Manhattan, I decided to engage with fellow patrons.
Two girls I had the pleasure of speaking with were Melissa & Samantha. These two Long Island girls had just came in from attending a Rangers game at the Gardens decked out in Rangers gear; of course I had to talk to them.
Why she loves sports: “I have two brothers and a father who are sports fanatics. Being the only girl in the family, masculine energy prevailed. Add my boyfriend into that equation of men being really into sports, I’m surrounded by it all day.
Her favorite sport: ” Vikings! Well football, but I love the Vikings” [I gave her a confused stare, and mentioned that she’s from NY] “My family loves them and I’ve grown up cheering for them too.”
Samantha aka Sam:
Why she loves sports: “The energy is great. I grew up playing sports and just have always enjoyed it. I love going to live games, especially in NY and seeing the camaraderie between the fans”
Her favorite sport: “Soccer. It was a sport I played as a kid. My favorite team by far is Chelsea.” [the bartender, from England, then chimmed in that her favorite sport isn’t soccer then, its Football]
The girls then informed me of the NY Rangers goal chant and started to sing it for me. Tipsy females singing = hilarious.
Anyways I youtubed it and here it is below:
I wanted to say thank you Melissa & Samantha for your time, and though the Rangers are doing great, i’d much rather have a repeat of the BOSTON BRUINS. uuuh huh you know what it issss.. black and yellow black and yellow 😉
