Who knew that a tasty pint of oatmeal stout could be oh-so-good for you? Craft beer’s rising popularity has garnered the curiosity of those wondering if beer holds similar health benefits as wine. In a recent article titled “9 Bad Habits that Are Good for You,” beer is listed as “a dose of energy-revving iron … as well as dietary silicon, a mineral that helps promote bone formation, which may improve bone density and help protect against osteoporosis. ” Dark beers are a heftier source than light lagers, according to research, and the article quotes Cassie Dimmick, MS, a registered dietitian in Springfield, MO, as noting that “beer is rich in disease-fighting antioxidants.” Antioxidants btw, are molecules that inhibit the damaging effects of oxidation in animal tissue — aka aging. Of course, it’s all in moderation. For every 12-0z serving of beer you’re getting approximately 150 calories. A glass of some solid amber ale with dinner should do, save the excess for the weekend.
Cheers!
