A Playoff Beard is the practice of an athlete not shaving his (I suppose could be her’s too…) beard during playoff season. The athlete is only allowed to shave once the team:
a. Wins the championship
or
b. is eliminated from the playoffs.
It is a popular good luck charm and a superstitious tradition that was started by the NHL’s New York Islanders in the 1980’s. Almost every North American hockey leagues practice this tradition.
Over the past few years, the Playoff Beard has transcended its way into other sports including the NFL, NBA and MLB.
Fans are even starting to join in on the excitment with growing beards as a sign of support while their favorite teams are in the playoffs.
As a woman, i’d much rather have my man be clean shaven, but in the name of sports; looking like Santa Claus is okay with me -as long as he shaves immediately after the season.
